Sir Derek and the speakers take questions from
the audience
|
The Competition Commission’s first lecture event
at its new offices took place on April 7 and was universally
reckoned to be a great success. Demand for places exceeded
supply as representatives from many of the CC’s
regular contacts in the economic, business and legal sectors,
as well as guests from other regulators and the government,
turned out in force to hear the thoughts of prestigious
speakers from both Europe and the USA, on different aspects
of competition policy.
The event was also notable as being the last such event
to be hosted by Chairman Sir Derek Morris, who steps down
at the end of April to be succeeded by current Deputy
Chairman, Professor Paul Geroski.
The speakers were as follows:
Michael Katz, the Sarin Professor of Strategy and Leadership
at the University of California and former Chief Economist
at the US Federal Communications Commission gave his thoughts
on ‘Is it time for the US to abandon its horizontal
merger guidelines?’
Lars-Hendrik Röller, Chief Competition Economist
with the Competition Directorate–General at the
EC spoke on ‘The role of economic analysis under
the new merger guidelines.’
Marc Ivaldi, Professor of Economics at the University
of Toulouse talked about ‘Empirical methods for
competition policy: towards a unified framework.’
A transcript of the evening
is available, along with Marc Ivaldi's
presentation. (Please note that at his request, Lars-Hendrik
Roller’s contribution has been omitted from the
transcript.) The lecture is intended to be one in a regular
series covering competition policy, law and economics.
